Secret Invasion: Feige Explains Decision to Adapt Major Comic Story into a Disney+ Series

During last month’s Disney Investor Day, one of the many Marvel Studios announcements that surprised a lot of fans was the studio’s decision to adapt Secret Invasion into a Disney+ series. This was a shock because many were speculating that Secret Invasion would potentially be the MCU’s next major event following the conclusion of the Infinity Saga. Due to the big scale of the popular comic book storyline, fans are wondering how Marvel will handle such a major event on the small screen.

In a recent interview with Collider, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige opened up about their decision to adapt Secret Invasion into a series instead of developing the project into a film, revealing that Disney+ would allow them to deliver something they haven’t done before.

“I mean, we’re interested in the political paranoia aspect of ‘Secret Invasion’ and really showcasing the stars with Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn, two amazing actors that you want to have in any series, and we’re very lucky to have them for that,” Feige explained. “That’s the sort of primary focus of that and, of course, it will tie into other things and the Skrulls in ways you haven’t seen before, but yes, anything could be anything. Wise words… But we wanted to do that as a series because it would allow us to do something different than we’ve done before.”

In another interview with Comic Book, Feige also went on to confirm that certain elements from the comic series won’t be fully covered in the TV adaptation including the big scope of characters. He also stressed that Secret Invasion will primarily give highlight to Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn’s Nick Fury and Talos.

“Well, there were more characters in the ‘Secret Invasion’ comic series than there were in ‘Endgame’ so, no,” Feige said. “It’s not that but it very much is a showcase for Sam Jackson and Ben Mendelson and tapping into the paranoia elements of the Secret Invasion comic series that was great with the twists and turns that that took. So, that’s certainly our focus more than, ‘Can we cram in more characters than ‘Endgame’? like publishing?'”

Written by Brian Michael Bendis, pencilled by Leinil Francis Yu, inked by Mark Morales and colored by Laura Martin, the eight-part limited crossover series centered on a subversive, long-term invasion of Earth by the Skrulls, a group of alien shapeshifters who have secretly replaced many superheroes in the Marvel Universe with impostors over a period of years, prior to the over invasion.

While initially appearing as villains in the Brie Larson-led Captain Marvel, the Skrulls were given a much more sympathetic portrayal in the film as they were actually racing across the galaxy to find a new home to escape from the Kree. Following their successful partnership and banning of the Kree from Earth and its nearby space, the Skrulls headed off to look for a new home planet, only for it to later be revealed in Spider-Man: Far From Home that Talos and his wife Soren had switched places with Fury and Maria Hill, with the former currently working with the Skrulls on their ship.
