Box Office: Tenet Stays Atop Quiet Weekend, Raises Domestic Total to $36M
In Deadline’s box office report, the writer mentions how last year at this time Focus Features’ Downton Abbey opened to a then astonishing $31.3M en route to $123.4M. That seems like ages ago! Especially when compared to this weekend’s domestic box office which saw Tenet bring in $4.7M (-30% from last week) in its third week of release for a total come of $36.1M. The pic is actually doing quite well abroad where it has brought in $214M for a $250M worldwide total, so don’t cry too hard for Christopher Nolan. Especially considering most of the major U.S. markets — New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco — have yet to open. And also considering the lack of competition, at least until Oct. 23 when 20th Century Studios/Disney plan to release Death On the Nile.

Tenet continues to do well in Imax, Large Format and Dolby auditoriums with another $505K this weekend and a $4.6M total. All told, a majority of the pic’s business hails from Northern California and San Diego. In fact, Orange County was the No. 1 market for Tenet this weekend. Well done, California!
Otherwise, the Top 9 continues to be uninspiring. The New Mutants continues to cling to the No. 2 spot with $1.6M while new release Infidel opened at No. 3 with $1.5M. Unhinged ($1.3M), The SpngeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run ($210K), The Personal Life of David Copperfield ($150K), and Words on Bathroom Walls ($149K) took spots No. 4 – 7. The only other new release was The Secrets We Keep, which pulled in $89,955 from 471 theaters.
